Seizures

Does your child have a seizure disorder or epilepsy that may affect their school day? If your child has a seizure condition that requires medication, monitoring, or emergency response planning, please contact your child’s school and the District School Nurse.

Early communication helps the school team prepare to support your child safely during classroom instruction, recess, lunch, field trips, and other school activities. Contact information is available on the Health Office page.

Seizure Disorders at School

What Families Should Do

  • Notify your child’s school and the District School Nurse about your child’s seizure diagnosis or history.
  • Submit required physician orders and parent/guardian authorization forms before medication or emergency seizure medication can be administered at school.
  • Provide all necessary supplies and medications as directed by your healthcare provider, if applicable.
  • Work with the school nurse to create or update a seizure action plan or health plan so staff know how to respond to a seizure.
  • Share any known seizure triggers, warning signs, and recovery needs with the school team.
  • If your child is authorized to self-carry or self-administer medication, make sure the required physician and parent/guardian authorization is completed and on file.

Important: For student safety, students are not permitted to carry or self-administer medications, and staff cannot administer medication, without the appropriate authorizations on file. California Education Code sections 33308.5, 49400, and 49423 apply.
