Flu

Influenza, commonly known as flu, is a contagious respiratory illness that can spread quickly in schools and households. Families can help reduce the spread of illness by keeping sick children home, following guidance from their healthcare provider, and notifying the school when a student is ill.

If your child has flu symptoms that may affect attendance or participation at school, or if your child needs medication during school hours, please contact your child’s school and the District School Nurse. Contact information is available on the Health Office page.

What Families Should Do

  • Monitor your child for flu symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, or vomiting.
  • Keep your child home when they are sick, especially if they have a fever or are not well enough to participate in school activities.
  • Follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations for treatment and return to school.
  • Encourage frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and not sharing drinks or utensils.
  • If medication is needed during school hours, submit the required medication paperwork and physician authorization. Visit the Forms page.

Important: For student safety, students are not permitted to carry or self-administer medications, and staff cannot administer medication, without the appropriate authorizations on file. California Education Code sections 33308.5, 49400, and 49423 apply.
