Special Education Programs

The Special Education programs and services outlined here are available in schools throughout the Jefferson School District for students who are eligible and require Special Education and related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Prior to determining eligibility for Special Education, schools use the Student Study Team process. Please contact your school for more information.

Special Education Preschool Programs

Our preschool programs offer a wide range of early intervention services for students between ages 3 and 5 who are eligible and require Special Education.

Resource Specialist Program (RSP)

Resource Specialist Programs and Services serve students requiring Special Education during their school day. RSP may be provided to students within their general education classroom or in a special education setting. RSP is designed to meet student needs based on IEP goals and objectives.

Special Day Class (SDC) Programs

A student who requires specialized instruction for more than half of the school day may attend a Special Day Class. The primary focus of instruction is based on the student’s age, disability, or severity of disability as described in the student’s IEP. Often, the curriculum offers an alternate educational pathway through school based on the needs of the student.

The Individualized Education Program (IEP) team may determine that related services are required for a student to access the educational program. These services may include, but are not limited to, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Counseling, Transportation, and Home/Hospital Instruction.

Related services are designed to address specific, specialized intervention needs when required for a student to benefit from their instructional program.

504 Plans (General Education)

Section 504 is part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and is not part of Special Education. Students who are eligible for a 504 Plan have a physical or mental impairment that limits one or more major life activities.

A student would not have both an IEP and a 504 Plan. Please contact your school for more information about 504 Plans.

Health Plans

Any student, whether eligible for Special Education or not, may have a Health Plan due to a current health condition that must be addressed during school hours.

Health Plans are developed in collaboration with the student’s physician and family.
